DPF Cleaning Services
Since January 1, 2007, every on-highway diesel engine produced has included an emission after-treatment device known as a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This device is installed in the exhaust stream similar to a muffler but is comprised of two chambers.

The first chamber is designed to oxidize a portion of the NO in the exhaust to NO2. In the second chamber, exhaust is forced through a wall-flow filter where the gaseous components pass through but soot is trapped. The trapped soot is then destroyed by the NO2 product produced by the first chamber. The end result of this process is a small amount of inert ash which remains in the filter. Over time, this ash will build up and reduce the effectiveness of the DPF and must be cleaned.

Cummins Northeast is equipped and ready to be your source for DPF cleaning. We have the required equipment and expertise to clean all makes of particulate filters. Regardless of the engine configuration in your on-road equipment, CNE can provide cleaning services for your DPF.

Two Levels Of Cleaning

There are two levels of cleaning available for DPF Filters. A Level 1 cleaning is performed by blowing out the ash from the filter utilizing a specialized piece of equipment to ensure that the filter surface is systematically and completely cleaned. A Level 2 cleaning is a thermal process. The filter is processed in a trapburner that allows for exacting control of heat to remove additional soot without damaging the filter material.

The Cleaning Process

Step 1

When a filter is received by CNE for cleaning, the filter owner and the filter’s serial number are recorded. The filter is then visually inspected with attention focused on obvious defects or damage.

Step 2
Test filter for air flow on the trap tester and record the results

Step 3
Perform Level one pneumatic cleaning of filter

Step 4
Test filter for air flow on the trap tester, compare results with baseline chart and determine if additional cleaning is required. If appropriate, repackage and return to customer or proceed with next cleaning step.

Step 5
Perform Level 2 Thermal cleaning

Step 6
Perform a second Level one cleaning to remove ash freed in thermal cleaning

Step 7
Test filter for air flow on the trap tester, compare results with baseline chart to determine cleaning results. Record results, repackage and return to customer.
